Europeans

Now the European groups: First Bartholomeu Diaz and Vasco da Gama opened the sea route around the southern tip of the continent. Then the Dutch started utilising the trade route to the East. In 1652 the Dutch East India Co. sent Jan van Riebeeck to establish what is today Cape Town, initially as a refreshment station. In the 1680’s the Dutch were joined by the French Huguenots, who fled from France as a result of conflict between Catholics and Protestants. A new community developed with their own language, Afrikaans (mainly a corruption of Dutch, because the Huguenots wanted to make the language easier for themselves).

The community started farming. They obviously needed land and they started clashing with the people who were there before them. This was a time of slavery and land-grabbing.
